“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life…Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (Matthew 6:25, 27 NIV)
There are lots of things in life that I haven’t got the foggiest idea about how they work.
I get into my car, turn the ignition key and it (usually) starts. I am not sure why it starts all I know is that when I turn the key, it starts.
I flick a switch in the living room and on comes the light. I’m not sure why the light comes on all I know is that when the switch goes down on comes the light.
The truth of the matter is that I don’t need to know how it works for me to drive the car or for me to have light in the living room. I can just rest assured that the car starts because it was made by people who knew what they were doing and I can rest assured that the light comes on because a qualified electrician completed all the wiring.
My life is a bit like that.
I don’t always know how life works, why certain things happen in the way they do or what direction the future will take, but I don’t need to know. I can trust in God, who is qualified to take care of things because he knows perfectly what he is doing.
I can rest assured because he is in control even when circumstances appear otherwise.
The trouble is I, like many other people, worry unnecessarily, rather than resting in God’s loving care.
Perhaps over the coming week we could have two worry free days?
Don’t worry about yesterday with all of its mistakes, failures and regrets.
Yesterday is past and is beyond our control.
Also don’t worry about tomorrow with all its possible difficulties, challenges and burdens.
Tomorrow is beyond our immediate control.
That only leaves one other day: today; and we need to leave that in God’s care.
Commit yesterday and tomorrow to him and thank him for another day today where he is faithful to renew his unfailing compassions every morning (c.f. Lamentations 3:22–23)
He will take care of me today because whatever the outcome God is in control and he knows what he is doing.
I don’t know how that works; I only know that it does, and that I can rest assured in his love for me.
Father, help me not to be troubled or worry about things that I cannot control or that I don’t understand. Rather help me to trust you, for you are in control and you are a good Father whose heart is to bless your children.
Have a good week trusting God.
